Faro, along with Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Antwerp, Chemnitz, Nicosia, Belfast, and Gothenburg, stands proudly as a member of the European Creative Rooftop Network (ECRN). This visionary network aims to reimagine rooftop spaces across Europe and bring forth innovative creative uses. As part of this inspiring initiative, the Açoteia – Faro Rooftop Festival came to life, capturing the hearts and minds of many.
This remarkable event provided a unique opportunity to explore the tops of buildings that are typically out of reach, offering breathtaking views of the city and the mesmerizing Ria Formosa from an entirely new perspective.
Based on three key pillars – environmental sustainability, community engagement, and the arts – the festival was a true celebration of creativity and collaboration. Showcasing more than 70 initiatives, some in partnership with the European Creative Rooftop Network (ECRN) supported by the Creative Europe program of the European Union, the event featured captivating performances and exhibits that left a lasting impact on all attendees.
One of the festival’s notable highlights was the unveiling of a stunning painting by Belgian artist Larsen Bervoets, created in collaboration with dedicated Faro volunteers. This artwork, part of a project of six European cities, including Faro, captured the imagination and admiration of visitors, even being visible from airplanes during their approach to the airport, adding a touch of artistic wonder to the entire experience.
The Açoteia – Faro Rooftop Festival’s first edition in 2019 paved the way for an even more successful second edition, solidifying its position as a prominent cultural event in the region. The overwhelming support from the community and visitors displays Faro’s commitment to creativity and innovation.
As we reflect on the festival’s achievements, we look forward to the next edition, set to return in the future, to witness more inspiring stories of creativity, community engagement, and environmental management. Additionally, 2024 will mark another significant milestone as Faro will host the final congress of the European Creative Rooftop Network (ECRN) project, reaffirming its role as a central hub for groundbreaking rooftop initiatives in Europe.
