The Azores is the first island archipelago to receive international certification as a sustainable destination from an entity accredited by the Global Council for Sustainable Tourism.
As of December 2019, it’s officially recognized under the EarthCheck Sustainable Destination program, making it one of the most sustainable tourism spots globally—an honour shared by only 13 regions worldwide.
The YOU-SMILE partnership chose the target groups that were linked to rural and sustainable entrepreneurship. As per Out of The Box Europe, we chose the Azores to host the Living Labs as a sustainable tourist destination that is of high value to develop eco-friendly businesses.
